Telecommunications in Cyprus are provided by the Cyprus
Telecommunications Authority
(C.Y.T.A.), which is a Corporate Body responsible for the provision
of telecommunication
services both nationally and internationally.
Services provided include telephony, telefax, telex, telegraphy, data
transmission, mobile
telephony, paging, maritime, TV transmission / reception and private
leased circuits,
audiotex and video conferencing.
The Authority is planning the introduction of the Paneuropean Paging
System (ERMES) in
1994, as well as the Paneuropean Cellular Mobile Telephone System
(GSM) and an
Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) in 1995. Furthermore, new
value added
services, such as videotex, and others will be offered soon
TELEPHONE SERVICE
Two hundred and six countries (206) representing 98% of the world's
telephones are
accessed automatically from Cyprus.
For telephone enquiries regarding cypriot subscribers dial 192
whereas for foreign
subscribers, country and trunk codes dial 194.
Public Cardphones and Payphones
Telecard or coin operated public telephones are installed at various
central locations in all
towns and villages, as well as at the International Airports,
Harbours, Marinas and other
locations.
Telecards of ’2, ’3, ’5 and ’10 denominations may be purchased from
banks, post offices,
souvenir shops, kiosks and from CY.T.A. Area Offices in all towns.
Coin operated telephones accept coins of 2, 5, 10 and 20 cents
denominations.
All public cardphones and payphones may be used for national and
international calls.
Dialing instructions, international codes and charges are available
in all public telephones.
Call Direct Service
This service offers visitors in Cyprus the possibility to call a
telephone abroad and charge
the call to the correspondent's bill. The caller is only charged for
one unit per call.
For Call Direct calls dial the special code number of the destination
country provided
below. You will be immediately connected with an operator at the
destination country who
will ask for the telephone number you wish to be connected with.
Charging will commence
when the correspondent abroad accepts the call.
Calls through this service are cheaper than ordinary collect calls.
Furthermore, the caller
does not have to go through the operator in Cyprus.

The Authority offers reduced telephone rates for trunk and
international calls during off
peak hours:
Trunk calls (between districts)
20.00-07.00 every day
International calls
22.00-08.00 every day and all day Sunday
TELEFAX SERVICE
No public telefax facilities are operational, but most hotels will
permit their guests the use
of their facilities. For telefax enquiries call 192 for Cypriot
subscribers and 134 for foreign
subcribers.
TELEX SERVICE
Two hundred and fourteen countries (214) are accessed automatically
from Cyprus.

TELEGRAPH SERVICE
Inland or overseas telegrams may be deposited at CY.T.A. counters,
through the telex
service or by phone at telephone number 196. Telegrams by phone are
accepted from 7
a.m. - 7 p.m. every day including Sundays and holidays.

Because of the 10% service charge levied in hotels and restaurants, a
tip is not obligatory,
but small change is always welcome.
Taxi-drivers, porters, hairdressers etc., always appreciate a small
tip.
Cyprus Domestic Transportation Services One can travel around Cyprus either by bus or by taxi. There are no trains in Cyprus.
